Every year we create a unique experience for “real people” who live in the “real world” to discover what it means to be “in the world but not of it.” Supported by the presence and beauty of the California redwoods, inspired teachings, contemplative inner work, and a love for the Truth, we will build a field of loving support for exploring more effective ways of walking the inner journey in our outer life.

“The Sequoia land has been held sacred since 1949 — it is a place where love has been experienced, where pain has been transcended, and where hope has been born.
The Sequoia Retreat Center is a place where the deepest meaning of life may be explored in an atmosphere of quiet and beauty.”

Cultivating a life of simplicity and peace

Most of us are constantly moving through our lives efforting to make it better, fuller, more meaningful and at the same time less difficult, less chaotic, less conflicted. Whether it’s having more leisure time, more money, a better relationship, more success, etc – our efforts are geared towards altering the outer circumstances of our life in order to achieve a more pleasurable inner state. And yet the cycle of suffering never seems to end. We continue to seek and push away.

When we are able to quiet our minds, feel our hearts and experience our inner nature directly, something mysterious happens in which all of the striving and avoiding drops away and we feel ourselves at peace. We’ve all had these moments. When this occurs it is never because of something we’ve done, but because for a moment, we open to what is ultimately real.

Being on retreat, where the daily demands of life are set aside for an extended period of time allows us to turn our attention inward in a way that we often can’t in our everyday lives. It also allows us the time and space to integrate new understandings and perceptions and practice new ways of being and communicating so that when we return to our daily responsibilities we can live in them in a more conscious way.

In the same way that we need sleep in order for our minds and bodies to remain healthy, we need periods of spaciousness and peace for our Soul and our consciousness to grow and deepen.
